We live in a battle zone with walking wounded all around us.  The battle is one that is typically unseen as are its wounds.  Yet both the battle and the battlefield injuries are as real as physical wounds inflicted by guns or bombs.  On the battlefield, the wounded stagger bleeding and bruised to the first person they identify who they think can help them perhaps a medic who offers them a simple field dressing but may lack the skill and time necessary to do more than stop the bleeding.

Field Dressings Do Not Reach Deep Wounds

A field dressing does nothing to heal the wounds that run deep below the surface. Complete healing cannot be achieved in this way.  Once the wound is dressed, the determined soldier heads straight back into battle.  Yet, nothing has changed except that now they are fighting a battle as a wounded warrior. He lacks strength, stamina and the tools to successfully defeat the enemy.  You see, what the soldier does not know is that deep inside an important blood vessel has been severed which is threatening his life.  Back on the battlefield, not only do the injuries never fully heal, but the risks become even greater. He may return to the medic or seek out someone else who can try and make him feel better without success. Some of the wounded may even sustain new and more severe injuries.  Others collapse and die on the battlefield.

In Need of an Air-Lift

What that soldier really needs is to be air-lifted to the nearest trauma center where a skilled surgeon can stabilize him and discover and repair the bleeding vessel within.  The soldier may also need an infection tended to or even an amputation.

Unfortunately, finding a skilled healer can feel like a daunting task, and many will give up or die before finding the right person to reach those deep wounds.  The most skilled surgeons are also costly and beyond the soldier’s reach.  In the counseling context, it is no less real and no less serious than the injuries and wounds soldiers face on the physical battlefield.  Every one of us carries emotional and relational wounds.  Some are more severe than others.  But make no mistake — wounds are real, and they affect our ability to live life as God intended.  Without treatment people can wither into less than what God desires and some give up on relationships or life completely.
