Family Therapy

“Learn to reach for the people you love. Nothing grows people like love. When we are loved, we blossom.”  -Dr. Sue Johnson

Using primarily a Family Systems theoretical orientation, we will evaluate your family system as a whole and also look at the subsystems contained within the family.  One of my favorite pioneers in family therapy is Virginia Satir.  When asked the question, “Why family therapy?” She answered simply, “Because it deals wtih family pain.”

Yes, this is true.  We all start this life with a family, one we don’t get to choose, and this family influences every aspect of our life. It impacts our identity formation and our ability to form and maintain healthy relationships.  Yet, every family is made up of imperfect individuals also impacted by the previous generation and life’s complications.  Sometimes we don’t even realize we are exhibiting signs of dysfunction because this is the way we have always known to function.  Our role as family therapists is to see the family from an unbiased lens and help families develop stronger and healthier attachment bonds and new skills to maintain loving relationships.

Family Therapy typically begins with either a 55-minute or 85-minute assessment where we will take a comprehensive look at the issues, as you see them, in your family.  Depending on your situation, this may be in a format where the entire family system is present or just with the parental system before engaging with the other family members. We will work to first establish rapport and build a trusting therapeutic alliance so that together, we can better define your goals and develop a plan to accomplish those goals.

Is your family experiencing a crisis?  We typically maintain a few client appointment times in our schedule to accommodate for clients experiencing the unexpected and needing immediate care.  The goal in crisis is to sort out the issues together and develop a plan to stabilize the family system – and each member within the system.
